Over View

The Defender remains remarkably close to the rugged, go-anywhere workhorse vehicle with which Land Rover was launched as a brand, shortly after World War II. True to the epithet "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", its virtues remain in its robust construction and supreme off-road ability.

Over the years, creature comforts have been added, more modern engines deployed and safety equipment improved. It's a great choice as a working vehicle, if rather spartan and slow as an option for everyday transport.

Performance and Economy

Performance is not impressive by car standards. Maximum speed is around 85 mph and 0-60 mph acceleration is up to 20 seconds in the 110. The TD5 engine is highly advanced however with direct injection by electronic unit injectors and it returns between 26 mpg in the long wheelbase Defender 110 and almost 28 mpg in the smaller Defender 90. The lack of performance also translates into a lack of refinement and the Defender is no long distance machine. Noise levels are high and although the ride is acceptable the bluff shape harms fuel consumption on motorway blasts. Handling is good, the lack of equipment keeps the weight low, and low down. The Defender handles as well as the Discovery in standard form.
Safety and Security

The Defender has recently been given ABS and traction control by virtue of it being fitted with HDC (Hill Descent Control) first seen on the Freelander and being spread across the range. However the twenty year old facia has no place for air bags, even on the options list and some of its square corners and edges would not be allowed on a new design today. Security is a similarly bleak picture, an immobiliser is optional, but no central locking, deadlocks or alarm are to be found on the Defender.

Equipment

Permanent four wheel drive with dual range gears and the packaged ABS / traction control and HDC is about the limit of the Defender's equipment. Power steering is naturally fitted but you wind up the windows by hand and stick you arm out of one to adjust the mirrors. The County specification, the higher of the two, gets a manual sunroof and cassette player to add to the base vehicle standard radio. You can get air conditioning as special order or open the two letterbox sized vents beneath the windscreen! However the equipment levels are like so for a reason. You don't want to find that a short circuit has prevented the windows opening in the middle of a deep river you've stalled in. But in the city it feels very basic.
Costs

Prices: The three-model range starts at £20,540 for the 90 TD5 Station Wagon.

VED and Insurance: All Defenders are in Band G for Vehicle Excise Duty. Insurance groups are 9 or 10 according to model.

Carbon dioxide emissions: the 90hp engine emits 282g/km of carbon dioxide and the 110hp engine 299g/km.

We provide the following funding options:

Contract Hire
A popular choice for VAT registered companies who want minimum outlay and maximum control of costs, especially when the maintenance and relief vehicle options are included. With this VAT beneficial financing package, one regular rental payment covers all risks including costs of depreciation and disposal for an agreed period of time and mileage. Road fund licence is included with contract hire, but roadside rescue, maintenance and relief vehicle provisions are options that can be added with contract hire and charged to the rental payment.

Finance Lease
Finance Lease is Ideal for VAT registered companies who want to handle the administration of their vehicles, and have the asset shown on their balance sheet. A VAT beneficial option where the hirer can choose to pay the entire cost over the agreed lease period, plus an interest charge, or pay lower monthly rentals during the lease period with a final payment based on the anticipated resale value of the vehicle.
