Overview

Quality and sporting performance were guiding principles in the development of the new Accord and the result is a car that's more refined than its fairly anonymous predecessor and which succeeds in moving closer to the standards set by the prestige European marques. Engineering is Honda's key strength and this shows in the Accord's good handling qualities and its excellent engines. A new diesel due in 2004 promises much.

Performance and Economy

The intelligent valve timing and lift technology (i-VTEC) used in Honda's petrol engines continues to deliver a strong balance of performance and efficiency. The 155bhp 2.0-litre engine can accelerate from rest to 62mph in 9.6 seconds, while the 190bhp 2.4 is more than a second quicker. The 2.4's six-speed gearbox and more generous torque allows for improved in-gear accleration, too.

In terms of fuel economy, all models muster better than 30mpg in combined driving, even when equipped with the optional five-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0 SE achieves a very respectable 38.2mpg and the 2.4 Executive 31mpg.The 2.2 diesel unit is superb, returning 52.3mpg and 0-62mph in 9.4 seconds.

Safety and Security

The Accord saloon achieved four stars in Euro NCAP crash testing, a result that may short of the Toyota Avensis and Renault Laguna, but which does reflect the good all-round package of standard passive and active safety equipment. ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution are standard on all models, but only the 2.4-litre versions benefit from Honda's skid control system. In the cabin there are front, front side and curtain airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners and three-point belts for all seats. ISOFIX child seat mounts are also fitted. A perimeter alarm and remote central locking with deadlocks are standard, but interior alarm protection is only standard on higher specification models. A rolling code ECU immobiliser, locking glovebox and wheelnuts and an integrated audio system are also included in the security package.
Equipment

The entry-level 2.0 SE model has a strong specification, including dual zone climate control, full complement of front, side and head airabgs, electric windows and heated door mirrors, sunroof, keyless entry system and 15-inch alloy wheels. Uniquely in the range it uses an electric power steering system, which is more fuel efficient than the usually hydraulic version. The 2.0 Sport version adds cruise control, larger alloys and go lamps, while the Executive provides sunroof, xenon headlamps, sunroof, six-disc CD players, rain-sensing wipers, leather upholstery and electrically-adjustable front seats. The 2.4 Executive is equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, drive-by-wire throttle control, 16-inch alloys, DVD-based satellite navigation and Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist system. The 2.4 Type-S has an aero bodykit, but dispenses with the satellite navigation and rain sensors.
Costs

Prices: On the road prices run from £17,515 for the 2.0i-VTEC SE to £26,365 for the 2.4i-VTEC with sequential shift transmission. Tourer estate models carrying a £1,200 premium over equivalent saloons.

Vehicle Excise Duty and Insurance: The 2.0-litre SE and SE saloons are in Band E for Vehicle Excise Duty. All other petrol saloons and the 2.0-litre Tourers are in Band F. The 2.4-litre tourers are in band G and all 2.2 diesels are in Band C. Insurance groups are 11 to 14 across the range.

Carbon dioxide emissions: The 2.2 CDTi emits 145g/km; the 2.0 SE 176g/km (auto 189), the 2.0 Type S and EX 189g/km (auto 200), the 2.4 EX 214g/km (auto 223) and the 2.4 Type-S 214g/km (auto 218). Figures for the Tourers are notably higher with the 2.2 CDTi emitting 155g/km, the 2.0 SE 202g/km (auto 208), 2.0 EX 204g/km (auto 213), the 2.4 EX and Type-S 230g/km (auto 237).
