Overview
The eighth best-selling automotive brand in the world, Dodge, tries once more to gain a toehold in the European market, this time with the Caliber, its distinctive contribution to the Focus-Astra-Golf market. The car's four aces are astonishing value (the range starts at £11,500), good cabin room, muscular looks and a 2.0-litre high-pressure diesel engine (courtesy of VW). Several more Dodge models will be lined up in the transatlantic export yards shortly. |

Performance and Economy
Dodge expects the best-selling Caliber to be the diesel, thanks to the torque and refinement of Volkswagen's 2.0-litre engine (9.3 seconds to 62mph, 46.3mpg, 138hp) and the economy offered by a slick, six-speed manual gearbox. There are also two petrol models: the 1.8-litre (12.8 seconds, 38.7mpg, 148hp) with a five-speed manual box, and a 2.0-litre (11.3 seconds, 34.9mpg, 154hp) fitted with a continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT). Neither of the petrols comes close to the diesel on any worthwhile count, and the diesel is even marginally quieter in cruising. The CVT is a fine transmission of its type, but it saps much of the power the 2.0-litre petrol engine offers. Ride quality, petrol or diesel, is comfortable without being mushy but, again, the diesel has the edge on comfort, handling and steering precision |
Safety and Security
Caliber has not undergone Euro-NCAP independent crash testing, but the on-board safety kit is acceptable for the price. All models get ABS, twin front airbags and side-curtain airbags, while the diesel has stability and traction control. Security on all models amounts to remote keyless entry and a Class One alarm and immobiliser. |

Equipment
Dodge has priced the Caliber in the UK to be as alluring as possible, but the bargain sticker doesn't mean the car has been stripped out. There are four trim levels. Entry S trim brings electrically folding and heated door mirrors, a tailgate spoiler, satinised-metal trim in the cabin, illuminated cupholders, a 60:40 split-fold rear seat with flat load floor, a sliding front-centre armrest with mobile-phone holder, four-speaker radio-CD player, 12-volt power outlet, rechargeable torch, map lamps and four electric windows. SE trim adds a cargo cover, a fold facility on the front passenger seat, height adjustment on the driver's seat, a recline facility on the rear seats, aircon with filter, and a chilled glovebox. SXT trim adds body-coloured side mouldings, front fog lamps, chrome grille surround, 17-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, and cruise control. SXT Sport trim tops out with 18-inch alloy wheels, body-colour panel on the centre-console and gear-lever bezel, and a nine-speaker radio-CD with six-disc changer, although it loses the leather upholstery. |
