Over View
The BMW 5 Series has long been acclaimed as the best executive car bar none. With that kind of reputation, creating an all-new model that maintains such a status was always going to be difficult. The bold styling of the new 5 Series has provoked praise and criticism alike, an issue that has diverted attention from more fundamental matters such as engineering, chassis and performance, the qualities that have long characterised all that's best about BMW. Touring models remain first rate family load carriers in the absence of a BMW MPV. |

Safety and Security
Every aspect of safety has been thoroughly addressed to create a car that will have few peers in terms of active and passive equipment and systems. As standard the car is fitted with front, side and head airbags. The front system is intelligent and deploys to provide protection according to the severity of the impact. Side airbags for the outer rear seat passengers are also available.
The basic construction of the car is engineered for optimum absorption and dispersal of collision forces and secure handling and braking is supported by electronic systems including ABS, brakeforce distribution and Dynamic Stability Control. The optional Dynamic Drive package features active anti-roll bars for more secure cornering, while adaptive front headlights and radar-controlled adaptive cruise control and run-flat tyres are also available.
The vehicles are protected as standard with a Thatcham Category 1 alarm with remote control operation and activation and a tilt sensor. |

Equipment
The standard SE equipment package is good, but not overly generous: for example, the audio system only has a single CD player. Air conditioning, the Dynamic Stability Control package, electric windows all round, multi-function steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights and part-electrically adjustable front seats are offered. A simplified version of BMW's i-Drive system for audio, ventilation and information functions is also standard.
Sport models feature lowered, stiffer suspension, a deeper front air dam, 18-inch alloy wheels and a sports-theme interior. Additional body styling elements, including a rear spoiler, can be purchased as options.
Key options include a more advanced climate control system, xenon headlamps, adaptive headlights and cruise control, "comfort" multi-adjusting seats and active head restraints and the futuristic head-up display which projects key data and navigation information in front of the driver. |
