Over View
BMW has finally entered the family-hatchback market with a specific model range rather than a cut-down four-door saloon, as was the case with the 3 Series Compact. The 1 Series stays true to its family heritage by retaining rear-wheel drive for exhilarating grip and driving thrills. The packaging could be better, though, and the ride can feel unforgiving on all but the smoothest surfaces. Dashboard architecture is well up to BMW standards, but some of the switchgear could feel classier. It's not cheap to buy or run, but residual values are predicted at 50 per cent after three years, which is sector-leading. |

Safety and Security
All 1 Series models have ABS braking, stability control, traction control, corner brake control, remote central locking, remote-control Category One alarm, run-flat tyres and eight airbags. The model has yet to go through independent crash testing. |

Equipment
All cars have a six-speaker radio-CD, electric front windows, trip computer, aircon and a split-fold rear seat. ES grade matches this specification, with the addition of 16-inch alloy wheels. An extra £1,950 on the 116i petrol and 118d diesel (£1,850 on the 120i petrol and 120d diesel) gives buyers two upgrade choices. They can opt for SE trim, which brings 16-inch alloy wheels, climate control instead of aircon, a front-centre armrest, front foglamps, autodim mirror, parking assistance and a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel clad in leather. Alternatively, sport trim offers 16-inch alloys, climate control, black interior trim, colour-coded body parts, front foglamps, sports seats, sports suspension and a three-spoke, leather-covered steering wheel. The 120i and 120d have electric rear windows as standard, irrespective of trim level. The 130i is offered in M Sport trim with a full body kit and M sport-themed interior. |
Costs
Prices: Prices start at £16,390 for the 116i five-door and rise to £26,915 for the 130i M Sport five-door. Five-door versions cost £530 more than equivalent three-door models.Steptronic semi-automatic transmission is a £1,460 option on the 120i petrol and 120d diesel; the dedicated auto transmission for the 130i is £1,505. VED and insurance: The 118d, 120d and 118i are in Band C for Vehicle Excise duty, the 120i is in Band D, the 116i is in Band E and the 130i is in Band F (Band G auto). Insurance groups are from 10 to 17 across the range.
Carbon Dioxide Emissions: The 118d emits 123g/km of carbon dioxide, the 120d 129g/km, the 118i 140g/km, the 120i 152g/km, the 116i 179g/km and the 130i 221g/km (226 auto). Values are for five-door models. |
