Over View
Audi's best-seller climbs the sales charts steadily because of the company's policy of continual improvement, its immense choice of engine, transmission, drive and body-style permutations, its superb cabin quality, and the fact that its closest rivals are becoming mass-market badges and consequently losing some of their cachet. The A4 diesels, in particular, are impressive, and the brand's residual values are now almost equal to those of BMW and Mercedes-Benz.differential. |

Performance and Economy
Seven petrol engines (2.0, 1.8 Turbo, 2.0 Turbo tuned to two different outputs, 3.2, S4 and RS4 4.2 V8) and five diesels (1.9, 2.0 tuned to two different outputs, 2.7 and 3.0) comprise the broadest choice offered by any single premium-car range. The diesels range from the entry 1.9 (115hp, 11.2 seconds to 62mph, average 49.6mpg) to the 3.0 TDI quattro (233hp, 6.8 seconds, 37.2mpg). The best, however, is the 170hp quattro version of the 2.0 (8.5 seconds, 42.2mpg). Petrols range from the 2.0 (130hp, 9.9 seconds, 34.9mpg) to the S4 (344hp, 5.6 seconds, 21.2mpg), with the stand-alone RS4 (420hp, 4.8 seconds, 20.9 seconds) serving as flagship. Many A4 models can be specified, or have as standard, Audi's quattro four-wheel drive, and various transmissions are available, including five-speed manual, six-speed manual, six-speed Tiptronic and seven-speed Multitronic. |
Safety and Security
Every A4 carries as standard ABS, brake-force distribution, traction control, stability programme, active front head restraints and multiple airbags. Security measures include remote central locking, Category One alarm and an immobiliser. All three A4 body styles earned four out of five Euro-NCAP stars for occupant protection, but just one star for pedestrian protection. |

Equipment
There are three trim levels on mainstream A4 models. Not all trims are available with all engines. SE trim brings 16-inch alloy wheels, 10-speaker radio-cassette, electric windows, electrically adjustable door mirrors, climate control and front foglights, cruise control, CD player, trip computer, heated door mirrors and washer jets, and leather trim on steering wheel, gear lever and handbrake. S-Line trim adds front sports seats, headlight washers, black headlining, multi-function sports steering wheel, sports suspension and body kit. S-Line Special Edition adds 18-inch alloys, a different style of sports seat, extra cosmetic trim and an uprated 220hp engine, among other things. |
