Overview
The UK was the number-one market for the original Audi TT, with sales here outstripping even its native Germany. Eight years later, the new TT moves away from the stubby look of the old car to offer a more masculine, sweeping design. Aluminium panels make it lighter; a rally-bred S-Tronic gearbox keeps it responsive, and four-wheel drive remains unique in this sector. The new car is six inches longer, three inches wider and a shade taller, and a longer wheelbase helps increase cabin room and ride quality. Only hardtops are on sale from launch. Roadsters will be introduced in 2007, as will diesels and a four-cylinder entry model. |

Performance and Economy
Customers can choose between a front-wheel-drive 2.0-litre TFSI or a 3.2 V6 Quattro. The 2.0 (200hp, 6.6 seconds to 62mph, 36.4mpg) feels the better of the two. It loses very little to the bigger engine (250hp, 5.9 seconds, 27.2mpg), and probably not enough to justify the larger engine's four-figure price premium. Maximum torque hits at just 1,800rpm and pulls through all six gears with hardly a hint of turbo lag. Ratios on the six-speed manual gearbox are well spaced, but the movement is sticky, even allowing for the few miles on the clock of the test car. The optional S-Tronic gearbox (once known as DSG) overcomes the clunkiness of the manual transmission. It can be used as a conventional automatic, but the box shines best as a clutchless manual, when it pre-selects the next gear so that changes happen in microseconds. Ride on both cars is firm to the point of bouncy on poorer surfaces, and Audi's optional magnetic ride system, which is meant to tune the ride quality for given surfaces and dynamics, seems only to adjust the ride quality from hard to even harder. |
Safety and Security
The new TT has not undergone Euro-NCAP crash testing, but the on-board safety kit is admirable. All models have stability control, traction control, ABS, and front and side airbags. Security amounts to remote central locking, locking wheel bolts and a Category One alarm and immobiliser. |

Equipment
The 2.0 TFSI comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, leather-trimmed flat-bottom steering wheel, nine-speaker radio-CD-MP3 player, electric adjustment and heating on the door mirrors, trip computer, electric front windows, climate control, front foglights, front sports seats, leather/Alcantara upholstery, retracting rear spoiler, and a split-fold rear seat. The 3.2 V6 gains 18-inch alloys, full leather upholstery, heated front seats, four-wheel drive, enhanced braking system, chrome body detailing, black-painted grille and darkened rear-light clusters. |
Costs
Prices: The 2.0T FSI costs £24,900. The 3.2 V6 Quattro costs £29,940. Roadster versions cost an extra £2,000. The optional S-Tronic gearbox is £1,400.
Vehicle Excise Duty and insurance: The 2.0 TFSI is in Band E for Vehicle Excise Duty. The 3.2 V6 with the optional S-Tronic gearbox is in Band F. The 2.0 TFSI is in insurance group 17, and the 3.2 V6 in group 18.
Carbon dioxide emissions: The 2.0 TFSI emits 183g/km, irrespective of transmission. Then come the 3.2 V6 S-Tronic (224) and the 3.2 V6 manual (247). |
