Performance and Economy
Five petrol engines and three diesels comprise the current A6 line-up. As usual, diesels are the most popular. The entry 2.0 TDI exists clearly to hit a price point (, 10.3 seconds to 62mph, 44.8mpg combined cycle), but is commendably brisk considering the weight it has to pull. Likelier prospects are the 2.7 TDI (180hp, 8.1 seconds, 40.9mpg) or the 3.0 TDI (233hp, 6.9 seconds 35.8mpg). Quattro four-wheel drive is not available on the 2.0; is optional on the 2.7, and is standard on the 3.0. Six-speed manual transmission is standard on most cars (six-speed Tiptronic is standard on the 2.7 quattro), with optional seven-speed Multitronic on the 2.0 and 2.7, and optional six-speed Tiptronic on the 3.0. Petrol-engine choices amount to a 2.0 Turbo (170hp, 8.4 seconds, 35.8mpg), a 2.4, a 3.2 (256hp, 6.9 seconds, 29.1mpg), a 4.2 and the fearsome S6 V10 (435hp, 5.2 seconds 21.2mpg). Four-wheel drive is not available on the 2.0; is optional on the 2.4 and 3.2, and is standard on the 4.2 and S6. All these saloon permutations are also available in the Avant, albeit with slight performance and economy penalties. |
Safety and Security
Every A6 carries as standard ABS, brake-force distribution, traction control, stability programme, active front head restraints and multiple airbags. Security measures include remote central locking, Category One alarm and an immobiliser. Both A6 body styles earned the maximum five Euro-NCAP stars for occupant protection, but just one star for pedestrian protection. |

Equipment
The standard-equipment list on all A6s includes 17-inch alloys, climate control, cruise control, Driver Information System, four electric windows, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, front foglights, automatic headlights and wipers, 10-speaker sound system, satellite navigation, leather-clad steering wheel with audio controls and heated washers. 4.2 quattro models gain heated and electrically adjustable front seats, headlight washers, xenon headlights, wood cabin trim and leather upholstery. Any A6 apart from the flagship S6 models can be specified with S-Line trim, which adds front sports seats, headlight washers, black headlining, leather-covered three-spoke multi-function sports steering wheel, sports suspension and body kit. S6 models are a breed apart, packed already with every gadget imaginable. |
Costs
Prices: Entry point to the A6 range is the 2.0T FSI SE at £25,380. The prices rise to £55,465 for the S6 quattro saloon. Avant models add £1,570 to the price of equivalant four-door versions. Vehicle Excise Duty and Insurance: The 2.0 TDI saloons and Avants are in Band E for Vehicle Excise Duty, as is the 2.7 TDI manual saloon. The 2.0 T FSI saloons and Avants are in Band F, along with the 2.7 TDI auto saloon, the 2.7 TDI quattro saloon, and the 3.0 TDI quattro manual saloon and Avant. Everything else is in Band G. Insurance groups are identical for saloons and Avants, model for model, ranging from 14E for the 2.0 TDI to 20E for the S6.
Carbon dioxide emissions: Diesel saloons range from 169g/km for the 2.0 TDI manual to 227g/km for the 3.0 TDI Quattro automatic. Petrol saloons range from 190g/km for the 2.0 T FSI manual, to 262g/km for the 2.4-litre Quattro and the 3.2 FSI Quattro models. The stand-alone emits 319g/km. All Avants return figures 3g/km greater than saloons, model for model. |
