Over View
Audi claims credit for creating the prestige compact hatchback niche and in the A3 offers a vehicle that successfully combines sporting character with practicality, albeit at a higher price than its closest relation, the Volkswagen Golf.
Audi quality, a strong engine line-up that includes advanced FSI petrol units, advanced technology in the efficient Dynamic Shift Gearbox automatic transmission and a wide price range allows the A3 to compete strongly on many fronts. Original three-door models were joined by five-door Sportback versions in September 2004.

Safety and Security
The A3 addresses all aspects of safety with front, front side and head airbags and active front head restraints. There are three-point seatbelts for all occupants and those in the front have pretensioners and force limiters. ISOFIX child seat mounts are fitted and the passenger airbag can be disabled if required. In terms of active safety, all models benefit from ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist and an Electronic Stability Programme. Where security is concerned, the A3 is fitted with a Thatcham Category 1 alarm, which has contributed to the car achieving lower insurance group ratings than those for the previous model. Remote central locking with double locks and a key-embedded engine immobiliser are also standard. |

Equipment
Standard versions of the A3 are fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels, electric heated door mirrors, speed-sensitive power steering, remote central locking, radio cassette system, electric front windows and split-folding rear seats. Electric rear windows are standard on all five-door models.
The SE versions add climate control, auto-dipping rear view mirror, cruise control, front centre armrest, audio system with CD player, interior lighting package, extra storage nets front and rear, storage compartment under the driver's seat, automatic headlamps with see-you-home function and wood and leather cabin detailing.
The Sport versions, which cost the same as the SE, feature 17-inch alloys, climate control, front sports seats and steering wheel, sports suspension, front fog lamps, rear window blind and gloss finish inlay for the cabin. |
Costs
Prices: Prices start at £15,540 (1.6 three-door) and rise to £27,000 (S3 quattro 3dr). The five-door Sport Back cars cost £500 more than their three-door equivalents. VED and Insurance: The 1.9 TDI and 140hp 2.0 TDI manual are in Band C for Vehicle Excise Duty. The 1.6 FSI, 140hp 2.0 TDI quattro, 170hp 2.0 TDI manual and auto are in Band D. The 170hp TDI quattro, 1.8 T FSI and 2.0T FSI auto are in Band E. The 2.0T FSI manual and quattro and the S3 are in Band F and the 3.2 V6 is in Band G. Values are for three-door models. Insurance groups are from 9 to 13 across the range with the high performance S3 in Group 18.
Carbon dioxide emissions: 1.6 petrol emits 169g/km (183 auto), 1.6 FSI 158g/km, 1.8T FSI 174g/km (179 auto), 2.0T FSI 186g/km (184 auto, 209 quattro), 3.2 V6 250g/km (226 auto), 1.9 TDI 135g/km, 2.0 TDI (140hp) 146g/km (154 auto), 2.0 TDI (170hp)154g/km (156 auto, 173 quattro), S3 217g/km. All values are for three-door models, emissions are slightly higher for five-door models. |
