Overview
Alfa Romeo has increased the size and appeal of its mainstream sporting saloon, graced it with a alluring scowl of a bonnet and turned out one of its best and safest cars in years. The 159 takes Alfa's renaissance a stage further, with notably better cabin and build quality, while not losing the brand's famous sporting characteristics. |

Performance and Economy
Alfa offers the 159 with a choice of three new petrol engines (1.9, 2.2 and 3.2 V6 4x4), and two common-rail diesels (1.9 and 2.4), all mated to a quick new six-speed manual gearbox. The petrol engines show the 159 at its Alfa best only when being driven hard at the top of the rev range. The 1.9 (9.7 seconds to 62mph, average 32.5mpg, 160hp at 6,500rpm) does not embarrass the marque, but is best viewed as the least expensive route into the range. It gets thrashy rather than rorty, under pressure. The 2.2 is better, managing 8.8 seconds, 30.1mpg and 185hp at 6,500rpm. The 3.2 V6 (7.0 seconds, 24.6mpg and 260 hp at 6,200rpm) comes closest to Alfa high-rev tradition, but at heavy ticket and costs. The diesels are the sensible buy, and the smaller of the two is the most rewarding. The 1.9 (9.4 seconds, 47.1mpg, 150hp at 4,000rpm) talks better to the driver than does the 2.4 (8.4 seconds, 41.5mpg, 200hp at 4,000rpm) and doesn't seem notably slower in real-life driving. Lower emissions make either diesel car the sensible business purchase. Six-speed automatic transmissions can be specified on the 3.2 V6 petrol and on both diesels. The new chassis and suspension arrangement helps the car feel more stable and offer a more supple ride than the outgoing 156. The 159's main dynamic weakness is tyre, wind and road noise. |
Safety and Security
In the latest Euro-NCAP tests, the 159 scored the maximum five stars for passenger safety, as well as four for child safety. Not such good news for pedestrians though: a paltry one star is all the 159 could manage. All models have ABS, brake-force distribution, brake-force hydraulic assistance and eight airbags. All have a fire-prevention system and VDC stability control as standard. All 159s have an alarm and remote central locking. |
